What is Gurukul?

The word 'Gu' means darkness, 'ru' means remover. 'Guru' means someone who enlightens you and is also a friend, philosopher and guide. 'Kul' means house, home, household, dynasty or clan. The word 'Gurukul' means Guru's home.

Gurukul is a charitable trust set up for the teaching of Indian Classical Music in the traditional Guru-Shishya style in the West. This particular music is the oldest surviving art form in the world. It has great beauty and depth of feeling and by its nature is very therapeutic.

The Inaugaration of GurukulGurukul was born on the 24th May 1998. It all started in December 1991 when 5 people performed Indian songs at Newcastle University. Soon many families joined in and met regularly. In May 96 we felt the need to move up to traditional Indian Classical Music. After searching in the UK we went to India and found our first Gurus cpable of teaching Indian Classical Music to the high standard required. With the help of many interested people and organisations Gurukul developed rapidly into an effective means of spreading the joy of indian classical music in the UK.

The Senior students were awarded awards to travel to India and stay with and learn from the Guru. Recently some other students have also received British Council Youth Awards to travel to India and learn music.
